Data Protection Declaration
This data protection declaration provides an overview of the method, extent and purpose of our collection, processing and use of personal data on the website of the South African-German Energy Programme (SAGEN) implemented by is implemented by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH.

Responsible Organisation:
The Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH attaches great importance to responsible and transparent management of personal data.

Below we provide users with information as to

  • who they can contact at GIZ on the subject of data protection
  • what data is processed when they visit the website
  • what data is processed when users contact us, subscribe to newsletters or press releases or use other GIZ online services
  • how they can opt out of the storage of data
  • what rights they have with respect to us

Information on the Collection of Personal Data

GIZ processes personal data exclusively in accordance with the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and the German Federal Data Protection Act (Bundesdatenschutzgesetz, BDSG). Personal data are, for example, name, address, email addresses and user behaviour. GIZ only processes personal data to the extent necessary. Which data is required and processed for which purpose and on what basis is largely determined by the type of service you use or the purpose for which the data is required. 

Collection of Personal Data when visiting our Website

When visiting the GIZ website, the browser used automatically transmits data that is saved in a log file. GIZ itself processes only the data that is technically required in order to display the website correctly and to ensure its stability and security.

Each time the website is accessed, the data stored includes, but is not limited to, the page that is viewed, the IP address of the accessing device, the page from which the user was redirected, as well as the date and time of access. A detailed list of the data stored is shown here.

The data in the log file is deleted after five days.

Data Security
The website employs technical and organisational measures to ensure protection against access to, and the loss, destruction, alteration or dissemination of your data by unauthorised persons. The comprehensive protection of your data against all threats is not, however, possible despite regular monitoring.
Any personal data is transferred exclusively by us in encrypted form. The encrypted data transfer by our website can be identified by the acronym HTTPS (Hypertext Transfer Protocol Secure) in the URL bar.

Storing Contact Data
Names, postal addresses and email addresses that are provided by users when submitting contact enquiries or placing orders for information material (e.g., by using the contact form, by email or by telephone) shall be used exclusively for any correspondence pertaining to the processing of your enquiry. This processing is conducted in accordance with Art. 6 Para. 1 (b) of the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). There shall be no transfer of data to third parties. The transfer shall take place using an SSL encrypted connection, meaning that any unauthorised access is significantly inhibited. Any enquiries submitted using the contact form are, as with enquiries submitted by email, deleted once the enquiry has been processed.

Recipients of Personal Data
There shall be no transfer of data to third parties.

Data Deletion
In accordance with Art. 17 and 18 of the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) any data processed by us shall be routinely deleted or the processing thereof limited as soon as this information is no longer required for the intended purpose, or when affected individuals do not submit their separate consent, or when statutorily prescribed retention periods and obligations render the extended storage of data obsolete.

Rights of those affected
Users shall have the right to prevent the processing of data, to enquire about any personal data stored about them and its processing, as well as to correct or limit the processing of said data respectively, or to demand the deletion of such data. This data shall then be deleted.
Users may direct any questions or complaints relating to this website to us by using the contact address sagen@giz.de or by approaching the Data Protection Officer via datenschutzbeauftragter@giz.de. You shall also have the right to file a complaint with the responsible supervisory authority for data protection. The responsible authority is the Federal Commissioner for Data Protection and Freedom of Information (BfDI).

Cookies
When accessing individual webpages, so-called session cookies are used (small text files that are stored locally by browser on the user’s computer), in order to facilitate navigation. These session cookies do not contain personal information and expire once the user leaves the website.

User Analysis with Matomo
SAGEN uses Matomo, an open-source web analytics platform, to collect and analyse information about how visitors interact with our website. This helps us understand user behaviour and improve our services.

Matomo collects information such as your IP address (which can be anonymised), browser type, operating system, pages visited, and time spent on the site. The data is stored [on our own servers / on Matomo Cloud in the EU] and is not shared with third parties.

The information generated by the cookies is stored on the Matomo servers in Germany. There shall be no transfer to third parties. Any data recorded shall not be used to personally identify the website visitor. The IP address shall be anonymized before storage. Today’s technology cannot associate an anonymised address with a specific computer and/or connection. Data shall be processed in accordance with Art. 6 Para. 1 (f) of the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and with the justifiable interest of analysing user behaviour, to improve the website.

Users may also exercise the right of objection to the processing of their data for the purpose of an analysing user behaviour. Users may disable cookies and the associated tracking by adjusting their browser settings.
