Embedded Generation

Every roof can deliver clean energy, every distribution network should integrate it.

We aim to support energy self-sufficiency, enhance energy security, and reduce the risks and volatilities associated with relying on a burdened, centralized grid, thus generating a more sustainable, inclusive and distributed energy landscape.

Project Highlights

The Embedded Generation Support Programme collaborates closely with 120 partner municipal utilities to decentralize electricity production and integrate more renewable energy sources.

We are offering a diverse array of specialized training sessions that encompass all facets of embedded generation integration. These sessions cover a wide range of topics, including grid impact studies, adherence to grid codes, metering methodologies, and tariff structuring.

More about the Embedded Generation Programme

Partners

  • Endorsed by the South African Local Government Association (SALGA) and the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy.
  • Implemented by Sustainable Energy Africa NPC (SEA), Solar Training Centre, Digsilent Buyisa and DNV.

The support we offer

We support municipal utilities with establishing or enhancing their application and approval processes for EG customers to safely integrate embedded generation systems onto their networks. We further aim to ensure the development of sustainable business models for municipal utilities and support aspects of their energy transition. The support available to municipalities is provided through training, customised ad-hoc technical assistance by means of a technical helpdesk of experts, access to resources and tools, and a peer exchange platform where all partner municipalities can ask questions, share experiences and lessons learnt.

How to apply for support

An annual open call for applications into the programme is issued through SALGA in January. However, if you have missed the call for applications and are interested in a specific training topic or require technical assistance on embedded generation, kindly note that the project working group accepts applications, depending on the budget and resources available. To enquire or apply to join the EG Support Programme, please contact Sayuri Chetty (sayuri.chetty[at]giz.de).
