A Powerful Start: SAWEM School Launch Marks a Milestone for South Africa’s Energy Future

The launch of the South African Wholesale Electricity Market (SAWEM) School was more than just an event; it was a defining moment in South Africa’s journey towards a just and future-ready energy system. With the energy sector at a pivotal point, the SAWEM School arrives at exactly the right time to equip emerging market participants with the tools, knowledge, and confidence to actively shape the country’s evolving energy landscape.

This landmark initiative, driven by the National Transmission Company South Africa (NTCSA), is proudly supported by the South African-German Energy Programme (SAGEN), implemented by GIZ on behalf of the German government. As a long-standing partner in South Africa’s energy transition, SAGEN is deeply invested in building the capacity of institutions and individuals who will lead and implement change.

“We are proud to be a partner for this truly important initiative, which reflects a shared vision to strengthen the capacities in the South African energy sector and empower future market participants with the practical knowledge and tools for navigating the energy transition,” said Anna-Maria Heisig, Head of Project (SAGEN-CET), during the launch.

Building Skills, Empowering Futures

The SAWEM School is designed not only to introduce the technical foundations of the wholesale electricity market but also to foster an inclusive space where collaboration, critical thinking, and real-world readiness are front and centre. The pilot intake brought together diverse participants, from utilities and regulators to engineers and economists, each eager to understand the mechanics of a competitive power market and its role in accelerating South Africa’s energy transition.

The feedback from the launch has been overwhelmingly positive. Participants left inspired, informed, and more connected to a community of peers who will collectively shape the future of South Africa’s power system.

A Word of Thanks

This milestone would not have been possible without the unwavering dedication of the SAGEN team, whose behind-the-scenes effort helped bring the SAWEM School to life. We extend our heartfelt thanks to every team member who supported the planning, logistics, communications, content review, coordination, and delivery of this launch. Your work made an impact and laid the foundation for what’s to come.

As SAGEN continues to partner with NTCSA, we remain committed to strengthening institutional capacity, promoting knowledge exchange, and enabling a transparent, reliable, and sustainable electricity market for all South Africans.

Here’s to many more successful steps towards a just and inclusive energy transition.
